Menopause, food to avoid

Menopause brings annoying symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings. Sometimes these are accompanied by a few extra pounds and it makes it harder for women to get or stay in shape.

The ageing of the body and the decrease in estrogen that affects our metabolism can lead to an increase in body weight, which is often difficult to remedy.

It is important to know what foods and eating behaviors you should avoid at this stage of your life.

Let’s see them below.

4 foods to avoid during menopause

  • It is good to avoid all those foods that are very caloric and contain high percentages of saturated fats. We know that in menopause, with the slowing down of our basal metabolism, our body burns fat and calories with more difficulty. So let’s avoid sweets, but also non-fat meats (such as red meats) and sliced fats (such as salami and mortadella), foods containing a lot of butter (such as baked goods), and especially fried foods.
  • Let’s avoid overly processed foods (frozen foods, sausages, etc.) and refined foods that tend to be lacking in nutrients and often calories. Some studies have shown that it is easier for women aged between 50 and 59 whose diets include a high content of processed foods and snacks to have poor bone quality.
  • Possibly avoid all those foods that, especially if consumed in the evening, can cause hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety and nervousness that disturb our sleep. These include foods seasoned with spices, especially spicy ones, and drinks containing caffeine, alcohol or sugar. Caffeine, a substance with exciting properties, is for example able to remain in our body for up to ten hours, influencing the production of melatonin, the hormone associated with the regulation of the sleep-wake rhythm.
  • It is advisable to avoid the consumption of foods containing large quantities of salt, such as cured meats and stock cubes. We try to season our dishes little, preferring a salt with a low sodium content (diet salt), so as to keep blood pressure under control.
